Abstract

This essay briefly presents some arguments in defense of the fact that Gilberto Freyre escaped the dominant theory of Brazilian backwardness. As a scholar of Franz Boas and Norbert Elias' concept of culture, he realized that the ways of being, thinking and acting of a people do not correspond to a certain unilateral and universal standard. The process of forming, educating and civilizing a country is contingent, singular and unrepeatable as a historical experience.
